East Berlin from Air (1970 - Postcard) A postcard showing the center of Berlin from the air in 1970, mostly what was then the heart of East Berlin. Best viewed large or original size. The Brandenburg Gate, which was on the border between East and West Berlin is in the foreground. The East German flag is on the top, with the Quadriga, flanked by flags of the Soviet Union. The first cross street is Wilhelmstrasse. It was the center of Prussian and then German government buildings from the mid-1800s until the end of World War II in 1945. The green area on the right-hand corner is now the site of Hotel Adlon, Berlins most prestigious hotel. Unter den Linden dominates the center of the photo. It was the traditional site for parades, but is constricted at both ends and is not a main traffic artery. The second building on the right is the Soviet Union embassy, now the Russian embassy. The Fernsehturm (television tower) at leftr was built in the late 1960s. The large gray dome next to it is the Berlin Cathedral (Lutheran). The tower in line with Under den Linden is the Berlin city hall. The large building at the end of Unter den Linden is the Palast der Republic (Palace of the Republic). It was the seat of the East German parliament, and had facilities for exhibitions and cultural events. It was built on the site of the former Royal Palace. The Palast der Republic has been demolished, and a replica of the Royal Palace will be built there - sometime. To the right, under the smokestack, you can see one of the still-ruined church towers of the Gendarmenmarkt.
