Sonrisas, the Spanish word for smiles, is the name of a small group of women in Mazatlan who are committed to enhancing educational opportunities for those with financial barriers. Sonrisas is making a difference in the futures of some talented young Mazatlecos by helping 4 students attend and complete University. Some of the students who initially received help from Friends of Mexico in elementary, secondary, and prepa have now graduated and are attending University with the help of Sonrisas. Sonrisas was formed 3 years ago, starting with one student and now supports 4. Several different fund raising activities each year are planned to generate sufficient funds to cover tuition, registration, books, supplies, transportation and other school related expenses. Sonrisas members also provide tutoring in English and mentoring to these students.
