Eight things you may not know about me: 1. My mother died when I was 4 years and I had 1 brother, Harold, who lives in Pennsylvania. 2. I was a pre-mature, 7 month baby weighing 3 pounds, 74 years ago, in the Smokey Mtns. of North Carolin, and for one year neighbors would come and spend the night to help my parents out. I was in a basket by a coal heater, which served like an incubator. 3. I was raised Baptist by my Dad and paternal-Grandmother and we moved to the Washington, DC area when I was in the 6th grade. 4. My Dad spoiled my brother and me. He bought us a Crosley auto when we were 13 and 15 yrs old to play with driving around our property. Then when I was 16 he bought us a small Harley Davidson motorcycle and I would drive it on the hwy. from Annandale, Va. To Fairfax, Va. (About 6-8 miles apart). No way would that happen today! 5. I worked at Hdq. Marine Corps, in Arlington, Va., a suburb of Wash.,D.C., had a Top Secret Clearance and was a Secretary/Courier for the USMC, and would carry Top Secret papers to the Pentagon on a Military Shuttle Bus, for my Dept. Head, Col. Fowler. Who would have guessed some 19 yr. old girl would be that responsible, and I worked for 14 Officers. This was an adventure-some job and it introduced me to a world I never knew! My Dad was very proud of me! Among other things I did, was to meet my husband, Jim Gura, who was a Marine stationed at Headquarters USMC. 6. Jim and I were married and I became Catholic through an encounter with the Blessed Mother in a little Military Chapel. Jim spent 7 years in the Marine Corps. We were married 4 of those 7 years. We were sent to Ft.Benning, Ga., and were there during the Cuban Missile Crisis when Pres. Kennedy bullied Kruschauff into removing the USSRs missiles from Cuba, which were pointed directly at Ft. Benning, since it was a huge training and deployment Military Army base. That was a really scary time for everyone on Post. There was an evacuation plan for the military, and one for the families. The men camped out on the Tarmat and were to be in the air within 90 seconds. Subsequently, we had 5 wonderful, beautiful children and Jims job took us from Virginia to Youngstown, Ohio; to Dallas., Texas; to Columbus, Ohio; to Nashville, Tenn; and back to Dallas, Texas, where we committed to stay, because of the CCofGD, and we didnt want our children scattered all over the country. 7. I was a stay at home Mom until my youngest child was in kindergarten, then I went to work for an attorney and worked there for eight years. It was in Dallas and the drive home to care for my family was very hard. I resigned and went to work for Plano ISD as their first Truant Officer. Working for an attorney helped me secure that job and I loved it. I created a Truancy Program in the Court System (particularly the Justice of the Peace) and worked there for 20 years until my retirement in 2003. 8. My interest has been cooking, watercolor painting, reading, praying the Rosary and sharing my faith with others. I also crochet and crocheted 31 afghans for my children, grandchildren, and now I have been crocheting a white baby Baptismal blanket for my Great-grandchildren. I also, love old movies and I am a News Junkie as my husband calls it. I love politics,, probably my living in the D.C. Area during my high school years and remember Sen. John Kennedy on the floor of the Senate debating a bill when our Senior class went there for a field trip. All us girls in the galley over- looking the floor were.swooning at the handsome Sen. Kennedy! I love to go out to lunch with my husband, friends and grown-up children. HaHa! I love my grandchildren (16) and being with my great-grandchildren (8). They all are the best thing in my life! One regret.....I only wish my daughter in Houston could be in Dallas, so I could see the three grandchildren there more often. Its so hard for me to travel long distances now. I have been somewhat side-lined due to very painful Arthritis, but, my family got me an IPad for Christmas and it has opened up a whole new world of communication for me! Thank you to my family and friends for your love and I love you back. Everyone must already know this about me.....I love God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, my dear Blessed Mother of God, and the Holy Catholic Church. I love the History of the Church. 8.01. Back in Fairfax, Virginia, where we lived I became very interested in the History of old Virginia, where I was instrumental, along with a group of like-minded ladies, in helping to restore and refurbish the Sully Plantation on the Dulles Airport property. I became one of the Presidents of the Fairfax County Heritage Society. I love History of all kinds. It is fascinating to me and I love to read books with events of history, especially, American History. Sorry this is so long! But, I loved remembering all the many blessings I have had in my life!
