Eminems target audience is young boys? Maybe it was about 15 years ago.... To admit my own bias on the issue itself, yes Im a fan of Eminems music...and Id wouldnt suggest banning his music any more than Id suggest banning Criminal Minds for glorifying serial killers....actually this is very similar to the argument about the portrayal of women in video games. Its important to establish first a fact that mainstream media having seemingly always missed, in more or less all of his songs (and its pretty easy to spot the ones that dont follow the pattern if youre a listener), Eminem is enacting a character performance piece. Thats a pretty vital distinction to make when youre referring to something like this. Do I think Eminem should be allowed to portray a character musically who is a rapist? Yes, I absolutely believe he should be extended that artistic freedom.....Id be a total hypocrite if I denied him that freedom, having written my own fictional works that include the act of rape....should that fictional work be allowed to include references to real women....tricky, I cant say Im a fan of that concept, but given the context here i can see why he does it. Now, would I be ok with a situation in which the *only* (or even the most common) depiction of women in the music industry was through characters wanting to rape them *or* if an artist who wasnt world renowned for portraying a fictional character in his work threatened to rape someone lyrically? No, no I certainly wouldnt.
