“Emotions are the colours of the soul.” One would ask Why and How is it so? Well, just like an enormous box of crayons, our feelings bring a rainbow of experiences to our lives. They are one of the greatest gifts God gave His children. He gave us emotions, just like His, so we could empathize and bond at the deepest level. We can love and be loved, know and be known, worship, trust, and discern. Our ability to connect with each other is unique in all of creation! Our emotions allow us to know and experience God. We can only discover the mysteries of God through genuine connection—to Him and by coming together as Christ’s Body to do his will on earth. Simply put, we can’t know God or fully know ourselves without understanding our emotions. But, while it’s true that emotions bring depth and richness to our lives, they also complicate our existence. Anyone who has ever worked through conflict with a friend knows how painful a strained relationship can be. In fact, unhealthy emotional ties can hinder our souls. Try to consider ways you have allowed your emotions—and as a result, your soul—to be bound. Emotional ties form in five areas: 1. Your thought life. What you give attention to and allow to fill your mind can bind your soul. Do your thoughts enliven and uplift you or bring anxiety and despair? Look for influences that shape your thoughts in negative ways, like media, gossip, or fear. 2. Your mindset. Scripture encourages us to hold tightly to the truth of the Gospel. When you allow it to be the foundation upon which your heart rests, it will bring confidence and peace to your soul. 3. Your attitude. Your attitude sets the direction for your soul. Allowing yourself to wallow in bitterness or discouragement will bind your soul. Adopt an attitude that fuels positive emotions and watch your soul soar! 4. Your beliefs. Your beliefs are the things that fundamentally shape how you perceive, and in turn, respond to reality. If you find your emotions spiralling out of control, examine the beliefs that feed those emotions. Identify any false belief systems, and you’ll disable the ties that bind your soul. 5. Your paradigms. A paradigm is the lens through which you see the world. Every day will be a fight to maintain a kingdom perspective. Keep your mind set on God and His truth to protect your soul from the world’s destructive messages. Any of these factors can govern your emotions and create ties that cripple your soul. In what ways have you allowed these to influence your soul? The choice is yours! It’s never too late to plant your heart and soul in the unconditional love, joy, peace, and safety found in God’s presence. Praying for the strength and resilience of your soul!
