Even though people are getting sick of seeing this in their news - TopicsExpress

Even though people are getting sick of seeing this in their news feed, a lot of people are already aware of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and they see this as just a fad now, I thought Id do this anyway since it wouldnt hurt. My video didnt go as planned due to the water missing a lot of my body, but that doesnt matter. What matters is that it was cut short. Therefore, I will go into more detail about the disease. Its the reason for the viral challenge after all. In case you dont know, ALS/Lou Gehrig disease affects simple tasks that we may take for granted such as breathing and swallowing, and it is a very painful way for someone to die from this disease. Some patients will live a long time with this disease, but that just makes the suffering worse. Not being able to walk or use the arms and the legs is another eventual affect. According to The ALS Association, Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. The incidence of ALS is two per 100,000 people, and it is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans may have the disease at any given time. Some people see this challenge as pointless. Some people are cynical and think that celebrities, politicians, and others have only been doing this to get attention, and make it only SEEM like they care. But its not pointless, as it has raised over $41 million already. Yes, thats a hell of a lot, and we dont know exactly how it will be used yet; but the more, the merrier. Also, the information will be given in due time by the organization. Plus, the awareness spread by people with tons of reach in social media is appreciated. This is one of the worse diseases in the world, and I have faith that The ALS Association will use the money as best as they can to lower its impact. Nikita, Patrick and Steven - you three are my nominations. :)
