Ever since our conference last year, I have been thinking about Aubrey Aubrey de Greys base assumption that humans should live forever. It struck me as wrong, but I could not put my finger on why. I wanted to believe what he said about us being conditioned to accept death as inevitable, but the evolutionary aspect of it bothered me. When natural regeneration is certainly possible, why have individual humans instead evolved to die? I think the answer is that selfishness SHOULD be futile. Everything we store up for ourselves will be lost when our bodies discorporate. Conversely, everything we store up for our civilization will continue to benefit and grow the superorganism. Because we individually die, greed and self-indulgence are ultimately pointless. Only by creating a foundation upon which others can build will our lives have any meaning.
