Every message in the mass media is highly suspect. The products of the mass media are neither innocent nor benign. The producers of the mass media products are unconsciousness. We cannot learn from them describing what theyre doing. A journalist knows not what they are doing, no more so than a school teacher knows what he or she is doing. The central lesson of the function of human cultural operation is that most people dont know what theyre doing, and thus we must resort, as other scientists do, resort to careful observation of what people do. Pay attention to what people do, not to what they claim they are doing. As Vern Radul astutely observed, there are three basic tiers of cultural actors: the manual labor servants who do and say nothing, though they may complain about the wages occasionally, the educated class whose task it is to have sufficient awareness to engage in clever thinking that is limited to managerial concerns, that is managing the affairs of the system, maintaining the functioning of the system of power without asking any questions about the system, and then there are the ruling elites who understand how the world works and give orders to the managers to follow. Humans are not that much different from an ant colony. Even ants have been observed to revolt, and even to conduct clever sabotage of the ant state. The central task of our age is the expansion of consciousness, of understanding how the world works, and from that knowledge, we will be freed to make choices that are otherwise invisible to us.
