Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Prove yourselves. (2 Corinthians 13:5) Gracious Father, in the confusion of human words, my soul cries out, “Is there any word from the Lord?” I wonder what You have to say about my present crisis. In the deepest reaches of my heart I know all too well. You call me to absolute honesty with myself, to mean what I say and to do what I promise. Yet so often my words are not backed by my heart, and my promises are not backed by actions. Though my intentions may seem right and honorable, I realize they have no value if they remain unfulfilled. And in the wake of that unfulfillment are people whom I’ve let down or even hurt. Oh God, I am fully accountable to You. Remind me that when I speak or make a commitment, Your name is at stake as well as mine. Help me to take my intentions and vows seriously, and to make them cautiously. And when I move to accomplish what I have committed to do, may I do it not in my human frailty, but in Your divine power. Amen!
