FINALLY got a response from an agency! The following is the email I just received: Thank you for contacting the National Cancer Institute. Below is a response to your recent request for information. Subject Cancer.gov Inquiry - Obama-Biden Plan To Combat Cancer Discussion Thread Response Via Email (NCI Agent) 07/21/2014 08:48 AM Thank you for your e-mail to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) asking about the status of the Obama-Biden Plan to Combat Cancer. We congratulate you on being a cancer survivor and hope that you will find our information helpful. The Obama-Biden Plan to Combat Cancer was a campaign position statement, issued during the 2008 presidential election, calling for doubling funding for cancer research at NCI and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within 5 years. For information about the Obama-Biden Plan, you may wish to contact the White House at whitehouse.gov/contact. The NCI also has special authorities granted to it by the President. For example, the NCI Director is chosen by Presidential appointment, and President Obama selected Dr. Harold Varmus to lead NCI. For more information about Dr. Varmus, please visit cancer.gov/aboutnci/director. In addition, the President’s Cancer Panel ensures that the Administration’s priorities are heard by NCI. For more information about the President’s Cancer Panel, please visit deainfo.nci.nih.gov/advisory/pcp/pcp.htm. Also, NCI submits an annual Bypass Budget that offers a way for NCI to communicate with the White House about the NCI’s strategic priorities for the National Cancer Program. Through these mechanisms, the White House and NCI are able to collaborate in identifying and prioritizing NCI initiatives. It is important to note that NCI remains committed to using all available resources to reduce the burden of cancer on society. Even without substantial increases in funding, NCI has continued to combat cancer in significant ways through research. “The National Cancer Program: Managing the Nation’s Research Portfolio” outlines how the NCI manages its budget including descriptions of major investments and profiles of research programs. This resource is available at cancer.gov/aboutnci/budget_planning_leg/plan-2013 . As a breast cancer survivor, you may also be interested in the NCI fact sheet “A Snapshot of Breast Cancer,” which provides more specific information related to breast cancer including NCI funding levels, key initiatives, and selected research advances. You can access this resource at cancer.gov/researchandfunding/snapshots/breast. Thank you for writing and for your interest in cancer research Candace Deaton Maynard, M.P.A.
