FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Putnam, the $2 million appropriation and bond issuance authorization for a drinking water quality improvement project and the $4 million appropriation and bond issuance authorization for sewage collection improvements both passed at referendum yesterday in a 74 to 30 vote. Water Pollution Control Authority Vice Chairman Bob Garceau, who is pleased with the outcome, says if residents had voted "no" to the items it would have delayed necessary work that would eventually get done anyway. Many of these upgrades - which include reducing the amount of manganese in drinking water, relining of pipes, refitting pump stations, installing sentinel wells, modifying a production well, abandoning an old well, and replacing and renovating ten pumping stations and related wastewater transport mechanisms - are legally and practically necessary and would need to be done sooner or later, according to Garceau. Garceau also feels that the estimates given, while reasonable, will hopefully be lower after the project is actually completed. Tune in for the full report.
