FROM THE NEWSROOM: School officials in Canterbury continue to research the possibility going solar to cut long-term energy costs at the towns school buildings. As reported, the Canterbury Board of Education has been mulling the possibility of installing solar panels atop the towns elementary school to curb energy costs in the district, and promote “green” practices. Canterbury Board of Education Chairman Walter Petruniw says that several companies have brought forward proposals, noting that solar company Greenskies has provided the most attractive option so far. “They gave a rate of nine and a half cents per kilowatt hour, and another one gave a similar rate,” said Petruniw, who added that over the period of the contract the second company had a larger percent increase. Petruniw says the deal proposed by the solar company is similar to others that have been pitched in Northeastern Conn. towns – the panels, or “solar array,” would be installed at no cost to the town, and then the school system would purchase 100 percent of its energy directly from the solar provider over a period of about two decades. Following a deeper review of Greenskies credentials, the Canterbury school board expects that it will bring the plans to install solar at the elementary school to the Board of Selectmen, where the idea originated. Tune in for the full report.
