Family, I grew up, I think like most African-Americans, with a strong distaste for Africa. I could not imagine identifying as African. By my late teens, however, I was hooked on the Africa bug and I became very comfortable with my African identity. I have never looked back and I have not since questioned my African identity. Now I would be fighting mad if you said that I was not an African. As my knowledge of Africa grew my comfort level with my African identity grew. So a positive knowledge of self, a positive perception of Africa, is fundamental. Indeed, it is essential.
