Fan question: My daughter is 3 1/2 and weighs 38lbs. When is it time to change to a booster seat? Answer: Your daughter would be much safer in a 5 point harness, and a 5 point harness must be used until 40 lbs. She will reach that soon, but remember most seats will accommodate children up to 65lbs. Since this is safer, no need to rush to get her into a booster. Besides her weight you also have to pay attention to her height as seats will also have a maximum height allowance. It is best to use her current seat to the maximum weight or height allowed, which ever comes first. If she has outgrown her car seat, or if her shoulders are above the top harness shoulder slot, then we would check the following if she needs a harness seat with higher weight/height capabilities (these types of seats are called child/booster and generally accommodate a child much higher in height), or if shes ready for a booster: 1) Is the child over 40lbs? 2) Does the vehicle have lap and shoulder belt? 3) Is the child 3-4 years of age. Generally, 4 is better. 4) Will she sit without leaning forward, slouching, or folding their legs up. The child should be mature enough to sit with her back against the seat back. 5) Is she tall enough for a booster (after about 40 inches)? If you plan on using a booster, you have to get a booster that allows for: 1) The vehicle seat belt to fit her properly. The shoulder strap must cross the center of her chest and sit between the shoulder and neck, and the lap strap must fit low and flat across the upper thigh and not slide up onto the abdomen. 2) Will she be able to bend her knees comfortably near edge of the booster seat without having to slouch? 3) Is she comfortable and, therefore, not tempted to place the shoulder belt behind the back or in the armpit?
