\♬/ ✪ February 3rd: On this Day in Music History! ✪ \♬/ 1956: Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash record together at Memphis Sun Studios in what would become known as the Million Dollar Quartet sessions. -------------- 1959: Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash in Clear Lake, IA en route to Fargo, ND for a concert. This crash would inspire Don McClean’s “American Pie”. Holly was 22 years old, The Big Bopper was 28 years old & Valens was 17 years old. -------------- 1960: Frank Sinatra started Reprise records. -------------- 1961: Bob Dylan made his first recordings at the home of friends Sid & Bob Gleason in East Orange, NJ. Dylan’s recordings were versions of San Francisco Bay Blues and Jesus Met the Woman at the Well. -------------- 1966: Paul McCartney met Stevie Wonder, then 15, for the first time after a show by Wonder in London. -------------- 1969: Allen Klein was hired as the new manager of The Beatles against the wishes of Paul McCartney who wanted his father-in-law Lee Eastman to become their new manager. Klein’s involvement was a factor in The Beatles’ breakup the following year. -------------- 1970: Led Zeppelin II was in the Top 20 on both the UK & US album charts after peaking at No.1. The album went on to spend 138 weeks on the UK chart. The album is now recognised by writers and music critics as one of the greatest and most influential rock albums ever recorded. -------------- 1976: David Bowie, in his Thin White Duke period, starts a U.S. tour in Seattle. -------------- 1979: Blondie had their first of five UK No.1 singles, with Heart Of Glass, taken from the bands third studio album, Parallel Lines. Heart of Glass was originally recorded in 1975 under the name Once I Had a Love. -------------- 1990: Skid Row peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “I Remember You” which was their second and final top ten single in the U.S. -------------- 1990: For the first time ever, the UK Top 3 singles featured non-British and non-American acts. Irelands Sinead OConnor, Australias Kylie Minogue and Belgiums Technotronic. Sinead OConnor had her first No.1 single with Nothing Compares To U, a song written by Prince. -------------- 1991: Sinead OConnor said she would not attend the Grammys even though she had five nominations. She said they reflected “false and destructive materialistic values.” -------------- 1992: Pearl Jam kicked off their first tour of Europe at The Esplanade Club in Southend-on-Sea, U.K. -------------- 1999: Ice-T told students at the University of Toledo that a life of crime is not all its cracked up to be. -------------- 2003: Record producer Phil Spector was arrested at his home in Alhambra, CA for the allegedly murdering actress Lana Clarkson. -------------- 2004: The Pixies announced they were going to reunite for a tour. -------------- 2010: AC/DC singer Brian Johnson, joined a growing group of critics of Bob Geldof and U2 singer Bono over their very public charity work, saying they should stop lecturing audiences about charity work and instead do their good deeds in private. Johnson said When I was a working man I didnt want to go to a concert for some bastard to talk down to me that I should be thinking of some kid in Africa. Im sorry mate, do it yourself, spend some of your own money and get it done.
