Feisel admits killing girlfriend, gets 15 to life October 17, 2014 By DEANNE JOHNSON , Salem News Feisel, 35, Boardman, pleaded guilty to murder and was immediately sentenced by Judge C. Ashley Pike to 15 years to life. Feisel indicated to Pike he felt pleading to the charge was the best way for him to conclude the matter, which was scheduled for a jury trial next week. I am here today to accept responsibility for my actions, Feisel said. I cannot offer comfort or closure to those I have affected... I apologize to the Shasteen family and my family... I pray that someday I may be forgiven. Several members of Shasteens family were in the courtroom and three spoke prior to the sentencing. Mary Ann Shasteen, the mother of Samantha, said when her daughter was born it was the happiest day of her life and when her daughters life was cut short brutally and purposely by a monster it was the biggest tragedy she has known. However, Mary Ann Shasteen questioned if Feisel thought about Lydia Rose, Samantha Shasteens daughter with Feisel, who is now 5-years-old and growing up without a mother because of his actions. Why didnt you stop? Mary Ann Shasteen questioned. I just want to know why. Erin Balough said the stress of losing her sister, Samantha, shattered my heart. She believes the stress also took a toll on her own pregnancy, causing her to bury her seven-day old daughter next to Samantha. Two innocent lives ended too soon, she added. Balough talked about the pain felt by Samanthas daughter because of losing her mommy and her cries of pain. Imagine being 4 and being told you will never see your mommy again, Balough said. If Lydia has to serve this life sentence without her mom, doesnt it make sense this coward should have to serve one too? Garry Shasteen, who was the one who went to the home when his daughter Samantha was not answering calls from family, was the one who found his daughter dead in the bathtub. He also referred to Feisel as a coward stating he ambushed his daughter when she was vulnerable. Garry Shasteen referred to a statement Feisel had made to Salem detective David Talbert about problems controlling his anger where he compared himself to the Incredible Hulk and had said You might as well paint me green, because Im like the (expletive) Hulk. In his own take on the statement Garry Shasteen stated You can paint you green, but you better put a big yellow stripe down your back. He added he hopes Feisels time in prison is harsh and brutal, he hopes Feisel dies there and his cowardly soul burns in hell forever. County Prosecutor Robert Herron praised the efforts of the Salem Police Department and the way the case was handled from the beginning. It shows something we have been preaching for a long time, Herron said. They put sufficient resources on it at the outset, stuck with it and put together a comprehensive investigation. Herron added the plea in the Feisel case, as well as the Salem murder cases plead to by Robert Harmony and Quinton Lewis, all indicate the investigations were well done. They are not shy about calling in the Homicide Task Force, Herron said. They are doing it right in Salem, and I think it speaks well of that department. djohnson@mojonews
