Florida’s ban on automatic application of foreign law, such as Sharia-based legislation from Islamic countries, in state courts could be perceived as anti-Muslim, said Amos Toh, a fellow at The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School in New York City. The text of the legislation appears, Toh said, to be fairly benign, as it basically treats all foreign laws the same: They don’t apply unless they are consistent with Florida state law and the United States Constitution.
