For my working studio friends Something that really irritates me with the 3 major recording magazines today Electronic Musician, Mix Magazine, TapeOp are the fact that every single article seems to be how you can do everything yourself. By everything i mean the process of recording and mixing your record. HOWEVER when it comes time for mastering they seem to think NO ONE can do it except for the pros. This makes zero sense to me. Rarely if ever have i seen an article that says here is how to master your own cd. Only articles on why you need to send it away to someone with a great ear or gear. Now Why on earth would it be not just as important to record through a $3000 converter rather than a $99 dollar one, or not use a $3000 Compressor as opposed to a $50 dollar one. But low and behold when it comes time to master a $3000 Eq is not good enough, or a $3000 Tube compressor or limiter just simply cannot do the job, you need the $10k dollar EQ.You need the pro’s and their gear. But keep recording through your $20 microphone by all means. Seems just like a Ploy to sell more magazines since everyone is trying doing things at home now. If we are in the age of DIY then lets get articles on how to do everything yourself and not just be selective on what home studios can and cant do. After all these mastering guys cannot make a piece of garbage record sound good but the magazines would have you believe they can. i write this after reading through about 8 magazines all with articles on why you need real deal mastering, but in the very same books article after article of DIY for your recording and mixing. Why do they try to hold on to the Mastering engineer but give no respect to the recording and mixing engineers? Not hating on these magazines because i read all of them religiously but what gives?
