For those following our flooring saga: it looks like the tile we discovered under our carpet is likely to be asbestos. Obviously, this was not disclosed to us when we bought the house, or we wouldnt have taken the risk. But now we have to act fast and get it covered up. We have two options, really. 1) Lay down wall to wall carpet and cover it up that way, which just masks the problem until carpet needs to be replaced again; or 2) Block off the room and vents, get the kids out of the house, cover ourselves head to toe and don gas masks, use industrial strength floor cleaner and three coats of wax, which will take about three days each to dry, lay some laminate flooring, and then scrub the room down, every square inch. All in all, at least a weeks worth of work, but a more permanent solution, short of paying an arm and a leg to have the tile removed completely. And it probably goes without saying that those of you planning to visit in the near future should probably be aware that we have what appears to be exposed asbestos in our living room.
