Fort Wayne City Councilmen John Crawford and Russ Jehl confirmed - TopicsExpress

Fort Wayne City Councilmen John Crawford and Russ Jehl confirmed Friday their plans to introduce measures that would eliminate collective bargaining with the unions representing city workers. City workers are represented by a number of different unions: three that represent police and firefighters; and the remaining six that represent non-public-safety workers. The first proposal to be introduced at the councils Tuesday meeting asks for the outright repeal of the collective-bargaining ordinance for the non-public-safety unions. A second alternative would be to repeal the collective-bargaining ordinance and replace it with a single, consolidated ordinance that covers non-public-safety workers. The two elected officials believe it to be in the best interest of the City and the taxpayer to fully repeal the current Collective Bargaining Ordinance, read a press release sent Friday by the City Council. An alternative ordinance for Repeal-and-Consolidate will be considered, although both councilmen believe the first option to be the better for taxpayers. On the same evening, Crawford will introduce a separate but related measure to repeal collective bargaining for the three public-safety unions. Both councilmen said their goal in introducing the measures is to protect taxpayers. The City will always have to pay its employees market wages and benefits; we should not have to pay above market values, Crawford said in a prepared statement. Allen County government has no unionized work force. Comparable positions, in each government unit, show the City employee is paid more in wages and benefits. Our responsibility to the taxpayer is to provide top notch services in a fiscally responsible manner, Jehl noted in the same statement. The current system puts the interests of the unions above the welfare of the public. This must change. Discussions on all three measures will commence at the councils May 20 committee session. Council meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. on the lower level of Citizens Square, 200 E. Berry St., and are open to the public.
