Four Drug Arrests and One Armed Robbery Arrest … Members of the “Street Crime Unit” under the direction of Lt. Robert Tardiff were conducting a “park & walk” through the high crime area of Newland Street and Orchard Street in the city’s North End. During their walk through the neighborhood they entered a parking lot near 13 Newland Street and could smell a strong odor of Marijuana emanating from an Acura that was parked there. As the officers approached the vehicle they could see that it was occupied by a male and female. The officers asked the driver for ID and as they were doing so they could plainly see a large amount of marijuana packaged for sale along with a digital scale and packaging material. The officers arrested both subjects and then found 21 Oxycontin pills along with cash. The following couple was arrested … 1) Barbara Hernandez age 40 of 16 Orchard Street 2) Victor Mercado age 28 of 16 Orchard Street, Springfield … charges … a) Possession of Marijuana With Intent to Distribute b) Poss. Of Oxycontin With Intent to Distribute c) Conspiracy to Violate the Narcotics Drug Law Both suspected drug dealers were released on bail and will be arraigned in Springfield District Court this morning. Pictures are enclosed of them both. At 9:35 pm last evening, Narcotics Officers under the direction of Lt. Alberto Ayala arrested two subjects caught in a drug transaction in the parking lot of the “DB Mart” located at 20 East Street, Springfield. The detectives determined through an investigation that a subject known as “Shorty” was making deliveries of “Crack” Cocaine throughout the city. This drug dealer would take “orders” over his cell phone and then drive to a pre-arranged location to make the transaction. Last night “Shorty” was spotted in his black Acura near Mason Square. The officers set up a roving surveillance on his car and followed the drug delivery man to the parking lot of the “DB Mart” on East Street. As the dealer arrived to make his delivery he was greeted right away by a white male in a pick-up truck. The officers on surveillance observed a drug deal taking place and right when the transaction was completed the officers moved in and arrested the dealer and customer. The officers found other Crack Cocaine in the dealers Acura that was packaged for sale along with cash. The drug purchaser from Chicopee had a bag of crack that he just bought. The following two subjects were arrested … Drug Dealer – Roberto “Shorty” Carrasquillo age 26 of Eddy Street, Springfield … charges 1) Distribution of Cocaine 2) Poss. Of Cocaine With Intent to Distribute Drug Customer – Steven Dzija age 40 of 26 Baltimore Street, Chicopee, MA. … charges .. 1) Poss. Of Cocaine Both subjects were held on bail pending arraignment today in Springfield District Court this morning. Pictures of both are below. Armed Robbery Arrest At 2:30 a.m. this morning the Springfield Police responded to an “armed robbery” at 1200 Wilbraham Road, Sunoco Gas Station. Officer Troy Hufnagel was on the scene in seconds and talked with the female clerk who described that a white male entered the store with a plaid scarf covering his face. This individual was also wearing a hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. The robber implied that he had a gun in his pocket and demanded money. The female clerk feared for her life and gave the robber money from the cash register. The robber also stole one pack of Newport 100 cigarettes. The clerks on duty observed that the robber had a screwdriver in his pocket and it was not a handgun. The clerks watched the male robber jump into a dark colored Honda Accord and flee west down Wilbraham Road. Soon after the robbery Detective Eric Ganley checked the neighborhood for the vehicle and found a car matching the description near 114 Lawton Street. This car was reported stolen in West Springfield on Sunday. Detective Ganley and K9 Officer Dan McKay checked the area for the armed robber with negative results. While the officers were there they observed a light colored Altima leaving the area from the rear of 114 Lawton Street. The passenger of the vehicle looked and dressed similarly to the robber. The officers detained these individuals and conducted their investigation. The officers found the screwdriver used in the robbery. The store clerk was brought to Lawton Street and she identified the robber at the scene. The officers also recovered the robbers sneakers that he was wearing during the robbery.
