Fourteenth installment of 75 years at Bulli Lookout. Landslide - TopicsExpress

Fourteenth installment of 75 years at Bulli Lookout. Landslide at the lookout. On the 18/11/1961 at 7.15 pm we were all sitting down for tea when we heard this loud rumbling noise . The retaining wall outside the southern tearoom windows slipped away to within a few feet of the building. At some stage a retaining wall of sandstone blocks had been built along the cliff edge with a returning edge of approximately five metres, and a set of steps at the end of the five metres returning wall led into the back park. The retaining wall and return wall were approximately three metres high filled in with sandstone rubble to make a lookout point and the foundations for the kiosk building. This was a very popular spot for sightseers. We grew purple mint bushes here in front of a ivy hedge that had been planted as a southerly wind break..The purple mint bushes were two and a half metres high and a picture when flowering. We were very lucky the landslide didnt fall away on a busy Sunday afternoon. We had a set of swings in this area ,where my son John ,as well as children visiting loved to play . The trust contacted Carl Wolfe Constructions to build a retaining wall . Watching these men working on their machines on the edge of the escapement was nerve racking. I do not know how they could work so close to the edge. To be continued.
