Friends, I need your advice on blackface by a cop. This morning the photo below was posted on FB by my Hispanic cousin-in-law, of her and her now husband (white, Italian American) from Halloween 2010. Been eating me up all day. His costume is offensive, but also disturbing because he is a New Jersey state trooper. He should know better than to do this, and to allow it be posted on social media 4 years later. Especially with all the controversy in social media right now around blackface costumes. But broader still, Im fearful that his attitude in this indicates proclivity for racial injustice on the job...by him and probably many others on his force since they were not concerned about his coworkers seeing it. My husband is upset by this also but says he is used to ignorance and racism in his family. He used to call them on it but would always be verbally attacked and belittled for it. So my question-what can I do that could be positive in this situation? She was a bridesmaid in my wedding but we are not close- I see her once every year or two. Ive only met him three times. This photo has received 19 likes and counting including several white and Hispanic members of both sides of my husbands extended family. I am not worried about the harassment I certainly will be the object of if I comment, I can take it, but I am concerned about setting off a reaction of hate speech that could be as harmful as the photo itself, especially for their black friends to read (yes, shocker, there are a few). Based on hubbys prior experience he has discouraged this. What I think Id like to do is submit a complaint or report somewhere that has a chance of being reviewed...he and probably his whole force really need racial sensitivity education. Or reprimand. If he wasnt a cop Id could let it pass, maybe, but I think this is serious. Ideas? Reaction? Also think theres no chance hes an admirer of Antoine Dodson...it seems clear to me that hes making fun of him. Do you agree? +#%%**#}]>!!!!!!!
