From Julian Resnick, mazkir of World Habonim: Solidarity As difficult a time as this is for me, it is also allowing me to really understand what touches me and what motivates me in a way which I do not think I have been able to ever do before. It is not as if it is the first time I have been through troubled times here in Israel, but I feel as if I have never been in the emotional place I am in at the moment and that makes all the difference. Tonight, in twenty minutes, at 11pm, a young soldier whose family lives in Texas is being buried in Haifa. His unit is still heavily involved in the fighting in Gaza and the family does not have many connections in Israel. An hour and a half ago I gave the go ahead for the young people on our programmes here to travel the hour it takes from where we moved them (away from Beersheva and Rishon Le Tzion) to get to the military cemetery in Haifa. They have been demanding an opportunity to do something to help and tonight they will do exactly that. Solidarity is perhaps the most moving part of being here right now. The desperate need so many people have here right now to do something for somebody else. Over 50 of our young 18-20 year olds will stand and say Amen during the Kaddish, will help shovel soil on to the grave, will wish the family a future with no further pain (can there be more) and most importantly will learn that when someone is in pain we can all step forward to offer our help even if it is only to say Amen. Amen
