(From Leopoldo Aguerrevere) Dear Friends: In the struggle of the Venezuelan people to restore democracy and the rule of law in our country, as well as denounce the serious Human Rights violations that the government is carrying out everyday, March 21st 2014, was a momentous day. In an attempt to circumvent the limits on freedom imposed by the government, an opposition assemblywoman asked to be heard at the OAS session being held today in Washington DC. Through the gracious offer of the government of Panama, the opposition representative (Maria C. Machado) was to use that countrys seat at the table to put forth the point of view of my suffering countryfolk, accompanied by a leader of the student movement, a union leader, and the mother of one of the students killed. Unfortunately, invoking a procedural rule, the government of Nicaragua asked for the debate to be made private, thereby denying our opposition representative the right to be heard by the media in such an important forum. A similar tactic, I must say, used by the Venezuelan National Assembly. After a short debate, the motion was put to a vote and it won, effectively shutting down another opportunity by our oppressed people to cry for help. Several of the countries that voted for a private meeting have been beholden to the whims of the Venezuelan government via their dependency on our free or cheap oil, hence their vote. I hereby ask you to help the cause of democracy and human rights by boycotting those countries. Most of them are Caribbean islands that depend on tourism as a main source of income, and a boycott on traveling there for vacation will certainly be more damaging than an interruption in the flow of Venezuelan oil. I ask you to help wake these governments consciences and choose to vacation somewhere else (and tell your friends as well). Heres the list: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haití, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Grenada, Suriname, Dominica, St. Lucía, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bahamas, St. Kitts & Nevis, Belize, and Guyana. If you are looking for alternative travel plans, I recommend beautiful alternatives where the governments have their hearts in the right place, such as Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico. I count on you! 21 de marzo de 2014, 13:57
