Fundamentalism is a twentieth century invention among “far right, ultra-orthodox" members of a religious tradition in opposition to the perceived encroaching threat of secularism. It is often violent and/or outspoken on social and political issues. As a twentieth century invention fundamentalism can hardly be considered the original version of a religion that’s anywhere from 1,500 to 4,000 years old. Equating orthodoxy with fundamentalism is uninformed or dishonest, and the New Atheist argument that moderate/liberal religion is a weak version of the fundamentalist original is fallacious and historically ignorant.
