Future Beethoven third competition guys, notice the execution of trills from the real note and from the note above (among other things, of course). Very interesting choices. https://youtube/watch?v=S8mOzHvkvIU I confess that I had not heard of this pianist (born in the early 80s) and I thank a composer friend of mine for sending me this clip. Here are more details about him as well as a few other sound clips including a wonderful Beethoven 4th Concerto (also with an interesting trill from the upper note): schmidtart/artists/martin_helmchen Now, you all know all too well how much I regard the pianists of the past (and I always brag about them) but I do gladly keep an eye on the youngest too--particularly those, like this one--who demonstrate some sense of gusto (taste) in performance as opposed to the superficial show off and bad taste we hear all too often. The various pianists that do play with sentimental taste today are not so far from this well-known example at https://youtube/watch?v=9jGZbheKpgc which should be used a reference for sentimentalism among other things. Notice the crescendo within three notes or accentuation done pretty much randomly. The left hand hammering out the Alberti bass is also interesting sometimes. Now some pop music expert will criticize me for this but since he is performing Beethoven cant care much. Listen at 2:40 the crescendo with subito piano in places Beethoven would have never dreamed of. (Actually, some students really do that too but that is another story and I believe it has to do with the ear missing the important final note or/and consequently with a drop of tension in the hand.) There are no different schools in piano playing I believe: its just about good or bad.
