GMFBF & F. Its Saturday, the 17th of January, 2015, the start of the Dr. MLK birthday weekend. Going to be a beautiful weekend. Get up! THANK GOD, and go forth. ITS YOUR DAY. If today is your birthday or anniversary, I send you a HAPPY-HAPPY. Speaking of Dr. King, I went to see SELMA, Friday afternoon. It brought back memories of the 60s right here in Sanford. Now, if you never participated in Civil Rights marches, etc., its probably just a movie to you, but if you were part of that movement, then, the movie opened old wounds. Yes, I WAS A PART OF THAT MOVEMENT AND RIGHT HERE IN THE CHURCHES AND STREETS OF THE CITY, we tried to replicate what Dr. King and others were doing all over the United States. We wanted freedom and equality. We wanted to be treated fairly. Suppose Dr. King had stopped or turned violent. No, in spite of, he kept the faith and died believing that non-violence is the best way. No matter how many times they were turned back, they continued to go back...:Aint gon let nobody turn me round WE SANG THOSE FREEDOM SONGS RIGHT HERE IN Sanford WHILE WALKING HAND IN HAND TO VARIOUS RESTAURANTS, JUST TRYING TO BE SERVED. My friend was shot in the leg while we were trying to flee a Horner Blvd. restaurant. It wasnt until 2011 that I was told who shot her, something that has been a secret since 1962. Ive sat on boards and commissions with members of that family. I am so glad that I know who I am and whose I am and cannot be bought. That has been a problem for years. I AM REMINDED OF A LOCAL POLITICIAN WHO SENT ME AN ENVELOPE FILLED WITH MONEY because he wanted me to coerce blacks to vote for him. Imagine his surprise when on the day after the election, I took the envelope and all of its contents back to him. He never asked me to help him again, I hope parents will take their children to see the movie...let them see how it was!....Weve come a long way, and thanks to leaders like Dr. King, the late Dr. J. R. Hampton of Blandonia Presbyterian Church and those OLD, dedicated members of the local chapter of the NAACP , a lot of doors were open that without them, may have stayed closed. But, we cant rest on our laurels. Theres still much work to be done. Dr. King was interested in unity..HE WANTED BLACK MEN AND WHITE MEN TO SIT AT THE TABLE OF BROTHERHOOD. MANY OF US ARE SITTING AT THE TABLE, BUT MANY MORE NEED TO JOIN. THERES LOTS OF ROOM LEFT. Lets join together and make the Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING OBSERVANCE a red letter event in our town. P.S. Make it a day on, Not a day off. Thats what Dr. King would have wanted! Be blessed, and spread UNITY today.
