PATHS2 – MANAGEMENT INFORMATION FOR OUTPUT 5 INDICATORS IMPLEMENTATION PHASE. 15TH AUGUST 2013 The inadequate number of skilled health workers, fragmentation of referral systems, decaying infrastructure and sub-optimal health care financing and demand-side challenges has hindered the achievement of significant milestones. Poor health facility utilization rates have been found in the Northern part of Nigeria, where over 60% of childbirths are still facilitated by unskilled birth attendants. Despite the recent up-trending of Antenatal Care visits among pregnant women, a significant proportion decline to come to the facility once their labour starts. Mannion Daniels, UK an implementing partner for Output 5 and provision of Technical leadership on the BCC strategy and implementation, seeks to assess the impact its interventions have had, if any, on the level of knowledge of four (4) key health issues hence the conduct of the surveys in the project States (Enugu, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa) by Preston Healthcare consulting, Ltd. The BCC messages were particularly targeted towards the benefits of facility births, the danger signs of pregnancy, the name and location of the nearest Emergency Obstetric Care facility, as well as the home management of childhood diarrhoea. The idea behind the BBC messages are, better informed citizens will make better health choices resulting in preventable maternal deaths. The WHO cluster system based on 500,000 population served by one Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care (CEOC), 4 Basic Emergency Obstetric Care (BEOCs) and 8 Primary Health Care (PHCs) was adopted by PATHS2. These WHO clusters are comprised of one to four LGAs depending upon the population. A typical focal LGA has a BEOC, as well as, 2 upgraded PHCs. The study was limited to the Catchment Areas of BEOC health facility clusters in two (2) focal LGAs in Enugu, Lagos, Kano and Kaduna States and three (3) focal LGAs in Jigawa State. The survey findings are intended to provide managerial decision support for future BCC interventions, including content and methodology, and to provide useful insights into related aspects of health seeking behaviour.
