GREETINGS !!! A moment to share to all. Read and Be informed. (Be a Leader, not just a Follower) The primary task of a leader is to improve himself, first and foremost !!! How does one become a better leader? By Jelson Capillos 1. Commit to personal excellence. Devote time to personal development. A leader should be the best representative of the team, for if it were not the case, he has no right to lead. A leader should consume (read, watch, listen to) materials that will enhance leadership skills and capabilities. He should avoid activities or materials that do not add value to his personality and to the rest of the team. A leader should also keep himself healthy. His performance and energy, as well as how people will perceive him, will rely on the condition of his health, hence he has to make sure he takes care of himself in order to perform better. 2. Communicate well and connect. With development comes mastery. Leadership is about relationships, hence, a leader has to take time to establish rapport, get to know people’s strengths and opportunities for growth, and nurture genuine relationships. Communication fosters relationships, and it is through connection that people understand one another. The people need to understand the leader’s vision and what it takes to fulfill it, and the leader also has to keep lines open for the team’s inputs or feedback. 3. Make it personal. People need to have an emotional investment to any task, and it is only possible if they see themselves as valuable part of a greater whole than an easily-replaceable cog in the machine. Develop in them a sense of ownership of the task. Continually provide them with inspiration and opportunities from growth. 4. Be fierce. We learn that fierce leadership produces fierce loyalty. Being strict should not be equated with being totalitarian. With the application of appropriate people skills, people will get to understand that a leader’s strictness is not to punish them but to ensure their safety, efficiency, and productivity. 5. Let go and move on. One of the factors that contribute to the turtle’s slowness is the shell it carries on its back; the weight puts a strain on its mobility. So do bad emotions and bad habits take a toll on a leader’s personality AND performance. As mentioned earlier, the leader should be the best representation of the entire team, and that includes having unquestionable character, and mental and emotional stability. He has to know how to handle situations well so he can react appropriately without compromising or spreading negative energy to everyone. The formula a leader should do, after experiencing something negative is “accept, acknowledge, and move on.” The team deserves better than your poor performance because of something personal. Simply put, how he performs is who he really is.
