Glen Rock has lost another life long resident who was active in the community for years. Rich Henry passed away recently. Rich was the man who asked me way back in 1974, Do you want to read water meters? So in a sense, he was my first supervisor. His obituary stated he was involved with the Glen Rock Water & Sewer Authority for 40 years. I know he did all the billing at one time. Every 6 months I would hand in my hours, and the gigantic check ( About $75. net) paid for my auto insurance, which was $85 every 6 months. Rich and his late wife Audrey Grove Henry lived on High Street for, I would guess, the past 60 years. His wife was a lifelng GR person, too. Both graduated from GR High School... I remember her when I was in elementary school, as one of the cafeteria workers...Both Audrey and Rich were always busy doing something. It was common for Audrey to work all day, in later years , in Seven Valleys, come home, change clothes and go to her mothers house ( Margaret Hershner Grove, Cottage Avenue) and mow grass pull weeds rake leaves, paint, ...something.. usually when Rich come home from work, he wandered over to Cottage Ave. as well and they would work until sunset....Margaret Grove, had a very green thumb & had a huge lawn, a showplace, and I bet it took 6-8 hours to mow the entire property. Mrs Grove managed her gardens and cut much of the lawn herself, well in to her 80s... One time Margaret Grove told me she went away for a long weekend, and when she came home, Audrey & Rich had refinished the hardwood floors in her living and dining rooms....For those of you who graduated from SHS about 1970, their son Kirk Henry, was a well know student and athlete. Outside of Sue Lau Deffendall, (and her sons,) who married into the Grove family, I do not know if any other members of Rich Henrys family is a member of this group, but I have been told that word gets around, when someone posts on here. I need to write a story about Margaret Grove sometime and share. . She was a very inspirational person, who influenced me quite a bit., sharing how she made it through the depression, among other things. Her most famous quote, A penny saved is a penny earned.
