LCARNITINE Supplementing with high concentration of LCarnitine is recommended in order to increase its levels in individuals that show a natural deficiency. Such individuals are primarily vegetarians and children born underweight. LCarnitine deficiency, besides from a nutritional insufficiency and malnutrition in general, can be due to health factors and genetic abnormalities. A deficiency can also be due to a problem with its transport to the mitochondria which becomes impaired to absorb fatty acids and metabolise them as a source of energy. This disorder however is present since childhood with signs such as muscle weakness, heart conditions and excessive blood sugar. LCarnitine is a chemical substrate of lysine and methionine. In synergy a micronutrient such as Vitamin C, Lcarnitine acts positively on liver and kidneys and supports fat metabolism and its delivery from one area of the cell to another (the mitochondrion). This latter function is linked to the production of energy and removal of toxins from the mitochondrion itself. Supplements of LCarnitine can increase performance by increasing the energetic output and recent studies have also shown positive effects as anti-ageing due to the ability of LCarnitine toimprove motor and intellectual abilities. LCarnitine is a recommended as a good supplement for the older, more sedentary individuals as it combats physical tiredness and mental fatigue. A period of over 3 months on the supplement is however needed in order to benefit from an improvement on physical performance for any individual. In athletes the dosage ranges from 6 to 9gr a day divided into 3 doses through the day.
