God’s intent for marriage Matthew 19:4-6 “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” Jesus left Galilee to travel to Judea. He took a course on the east side of Jordan travelling through Perea. There, sizeable crowds of needy people gathered pursuing His help. The Pharisees showed up as well to test Him concerning His philosophy of the institution of marriage. They asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?” They wanted to know if He subscribed to the liberal school of Hillel who taught that you could divorce your wife for basically any cause, or if He concurred with the school of Shammai who instructed that you could only get divorced for infidelity. Jesus response was perfect! In essence He was replying, “What does the Bible say?” First of all, it ought to be the philosophy and intent of every believer to do what the Bible says! He taught the permanence of marriage and the importance of keeping the commands and instructions of the Word of God! God planned one man for one woman for one life. There are two lessons here. The Bible should be our absolute authority in all matters. Secondly, the marriage relationship should be taken very seriously. Husbands love your wives as God commanded. Cherish them and take care of them. Wives, be the best help-meet you can be and submit to your husband’s leadership. Pastor Wilson (9-11-2013)
