~ Good Evening, I would like to introduce a brave Mum named Vickie Blood whos had her motherhood changed twice by Meningitis with her two daughters Charlotte & Emily. Here is the personal story of their journey with Meningitis from the brave & inspirational Mum, Vickie herself. Hiya this is my story. Charlotte was born on 1st September 1991 at 2 PM by c section as she was breech. She was normal healthy 7 lb 11 ozs. Abbie followed in may 93 and joe in may 94. Me and their dad separated in June 95. Thursday 4th Jan 96 started like any normal day. That night charlotte was sick a few times so I got her in my bed hoping she would settle. She didnt she was sick 7 or 8 times and had a very high temp but she couldnt even keep calpol or water down so I called for a doctor who came out around half 10 on Friday 5th Jan. The doctor thought it was a virus so I was just told to keep trying the fluids and he would be back out later that afternoon. He arrived back at 2 PM but charlotte had by now managed to keep some water down so he left. Within minutes she was violently sick again and became very sleepy. I rang the doctor and he came out immediately and admitted her to hospital as they now thought she had a water infection. On arriving at the hospital they carried out numerous tests and placed charlotte on intravenous antibiotics and fluids. At 10 30 PM charlotte settled down to sleep and at 11.30 I joined her. At 11.40 I was woken by crash buzzers going off. I soon realised they were for charlotte who had stopped breathing and was found by a nurse doing her hourly checks. I was escorted to another room while all doctors and nurses started CPR. Unfortunately at 12.25 am the doctor said there was nothing else that could be done and they declared charlotte dead. A post mortem was carried out on the Monday as all tests showed nothing. I received the results on the day 9th Jan. Charlotte had died from pneumococcal meningitis age just 4 years. Life was hard but I carried on for my other children. In September 96 I met a new man and quickly fell pregnant with my son jacob who was born in July 97 followed by kaitlin in June 99 and Emily in June 2000. December 8th 200 started as normal just emily had been ill all week with an ear infection. I was getting emily dressed when I spotted a tiny red rash all over her body. I took her to the doctors and was again told it was viral. At 2 PM that same day emily was sick and as I changed her I spotted 3 purple blotches and instantly knew what it was. Call it mothers instinct but I knew especially after what happened with charlotte. I returned to the doctors who told me to get emily to the hospital where she was very quickly diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia. Charlotte must have been looking after her baby sister because she quickly recovered with very little side effects. Its almost 19 years since my baby gained her wings but I still have bad days.
