Good Morning: Just a few things on my mind! I was watching - TopicsExpress

Good Morning: Just a few things on my mind! I was watching TV in the very early AM when I saw something that bothered me. Maybe its just the human services side or the super caring about others side of me. But what I saw messed with me so bad and even made me angry. Now I already know some of you will disagree with me on this one and thats OK. Maybe I am wrong but I feel as I feel and since its important to me I am being expressive. I watched as people were out in force in East Elmhurst Queens protesting a homeless shelter. I could not believe my eyes as people were shouting and screaming in the same way that some White racist people shouted at us in the South during the initial attempts to desegregate high schools and colleges like The University of Mississippi and University of Alabama. They even looked angry and mad like those racists in Howard Beach looked as we protested that serious incident years ago with marches led by Rev. Al Sharpton. Now here is the kicker! They interviewed some people from the shelter and some demonstrators. The demonstrators who spoke could barely speak english and all had accents. Now I am not against people coming over for a better opportunity. But how soon do we forget our past struggles? How soon do we forget what our ancestors, those who were not brought over in chains, went through as they arrived at Ellis Island with nothing? Heck how soon do we forget what our ancestors went through picking cotton as slaves. The beatings, torture, hunger, lack of clothes, and terrible living conditions. Some forget because they want to and than find time to look down on so many others. Oh do not get me going!!!! Than there were the residents who all spoke very good english and seemed based on language skills to maybe have more history in OUR COUNTRY! So interesting looking at the signs written in Korean and Chinese, hearing the deep thick Russian accents, and seeing so many who just might be recent to our country out trying to stop decent AMERICAN people who just need temporary assistance from having a place to live. Interesting how many of those who struggle have fought in wars or they are from families that have sent many members into the armed services to defend this great country. Than people with no vested interest come from other countries and get opportunities on the backs of hard working Americans only to discriminate against people who were here, who have opened doors for them, and much more. I mean some of the people protesting, many were Asian it seems, could not even speak english! Only in America can a person arrive from another country, get assistance upon arrival, get an opportunity through special programs and incentives, and eventually within a year be on their feet enough to look down on many of us whose ancestors were forced here in chains, I mean the nerve of some people to actually discriminate against people BORN AMERICAN! OK OK I understand the uncertainty of having transient people near kids. But I just get pissed off at the fact many of those protesting are most likely not even citizens. Again, only in America does stuff like this happen!
