Good Morning, The sky early this morning is fairly cloudy, with fog becoming locally dense in many areas outside of the larger cities… Temperatures were in the mid and upper 70s in Reading and Lancaster, PA yesterday — but no higher than the 60s less than forty miles to the north and east… Also, it failed to get out of the 50s in much of the Tri-State Area and southern New England… We’ve been warning you since earlier this week that both yesterday and today had the potential to bring a sizable temperature gradient over a relatively short distance, and yesterday sure did live up to that expectation! This morning, all eyes are on where that warm front is located… As of this writing, this boundary was still draped over western and central New York State, where some showers and locally heavier thunderstorms erupted late last night… These convective showers should weaken, but definitely seem to be headed for New York City, Long Island and Connecticut before they dissipate entirely… From upstate New York, the front extends almost due southward across Pennsylvania and into Maryland, and it is still going to be pressing to the north and east at “a snail’s pace” today and early tonight… We should be “playing up” clouds and fog this morning, although there’ll be a tendency for these to eventually break today in many of those same places that became sunny and quite warm yesterday… The temperature should soar into the upper 70s and low 80s across central and western Maryland, as well as in parts of southeastern Pennsylvania — some of Philadelphia’s western suburbs could flirt with 80, while the City itself fails to get out the 70s… Once again, we must emphasize again today that in areas located farther to the north and east, which includes much of the Jersey Shore, southeastern New York and in southern New England, the marine influence is going to be playing more of a ‘spoiler’ role… The east and southeasterly flow of air ahead of the warm front, ushering in cool and moist air from the Atlantic, should prevent the temperature from getting out of the upper 50s today in the coolest spots and just the 60s elsewhere… Tonight, we still will be looking at a rather “murky” scenario along the Northeast Coast… Some additional showers, fog and perhaps even a thunderstorm will occur close to (and especially north and east of) the warm front… With the front closing in on New York City after midnight, most of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware should break out into the warm sector… Therefore, most temperatures in either the upper 50s or lower 60s early tonight should begin to slowly rise late… For tomorrow, everyone from Boston to New York City should be encountering a warmer day as the winds shift to the south and west… In fact, there’s a good chance, as long as the sun is out long enough, for the temperature to make a run at 80 in New York, and it will be in the lower or middle 80s across much of southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey, Maryland and in Delaware… In addition to being a warmer day tomorrow for most of us, we’re also going to have to address the likelihood of a couple of showers and a thunderstorm or two… On the heels of the slow-moving warm front, a weakening cool front will be pressing towards the coastal plain later in the day tomorrow/tomorrow night… With this in mind, the first half of this Mother’s Day weekend will bring some unsettled weather as the daytime heating causes some instability… However, we’re still optimistic about Sunday, which will be no less than partly sunny with a warm afternoon… Most temperatures will be in the upper 70s or the 80s, and this type of warmth may even get ‘kicked up a notch’ early next week… In other words, some of the warmest air along the I-95 corridor appears as if it will be in place on both Monday and Tuesday… Beyond Tuesday, things get a lot more complicated in the longer range… A “backdoor cold front” that is expected to press down from the north and east during midweek will bring a significant cool-down to the Northeast… Conversely, areas located to the south and west of the front will remain warm… Just like yesterday and today, there could be another case where the temperature fails to get out of the 50s in parts of New York and in southeastern New England, but it soars into the mid and upper 80s in Virginia and D.C… How big this gradient is, and how much the temperature will vary over a relatively short distance are details we’ll be grappling with again in the coming days… Have a good weekend!!
