Good morning! As Jeff mentioned in a post the other night, a new record was set for HSC. A crazy amount of lightning photos shared to the wall and via messages. I have looked at every one of them and some are too close fir comfort. Lightning can kill you. PLEASE stay indoors during an electrical storm or the chances are you will get struck. Especially if you are trying to get close range lightning photos. Both Jeff and myself are experienced storm chasers. We know the risks and take precautions via remotes and wireless devices attached to our cameras. That doesnt mean we wont get struck by lightning, but taking precautions does reduce the risk for us. For example, do you know what stepped leaders are? Or how they work?? darting, retreating, searching for a target, all within a split second?? If you dont know the answer, then you should NOT be outside. When you find out the answer, you will not want to be outside. Even being under a shelter is just as dangerous. Trees explode when hit by lightning. The moisture in them becomes superheated and they effectively turn into grenades. The tree could be a hundred feet from you, parts of the tree become airborne missiles, so while you may not have been struck, the debris is just as deadly. While we are all fascinated with lightning, please remember it is DEADLY and if you are outside and within the electrical field of a thunderstorm, you are a target. This video is fascinating. A slow motion capture by a lightning physicist showing the birth of a lightning bolt. Please watch and share. Dotor Roger That in comments to let us know you have read this post and watched the video. If you watch the video first, please return and comment. Also, Let us know of any CLOSE CALLS with lightning. Thank you-Chris.
