Got milk? Don’t got brucellosis? Thank Alice Evans - TopicsExpress

Got milk? Don’t got brucellosis? Thank Alice Evans (1881-1975), second woman scientist at the NIH. Her pioneering work on the disease caused by contaminated milk led to pasteurization laws. She completed that work at U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1917. In 1918, wanting to help the war effort, she joined the NIH where she researched influenza and meningitis, among other diseases. Like many medical researchers before safety measures were common, she came down with the diseases she studied, suffering from brucellosis and influenza herself. She was elected the first woman president of the Society of American Bacteriologists and lectured widely, encouraging women to take up scientific careers, after her retirement.
