Gov’t Responds To ‘Occupy Flagstaff House’ Petition Government today, July 8 held a meeting with journalists in Accra to respond to a petition presented to President John Dramani Mahama by leaders of the ‘Occupy Flagstaff House’ demonstration. The demonstration was held on Tuesday, July 1 by middle-income earning Ghanaians, who began their agitation on social media with hashtag #OccupyFlagStaffHouse. Addressing the content of the petition – which was received at the Flagstaff House by Deputy Chief of Staff Dr Valerie Sawyerr – a Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, outlined several projects under development to evince government’s commitment to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians. He cited several road projects, which he noted have reached various stages of completion, as among steps taken by the president to move Ghana forward. He made particular mention of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, the Tetteh Quarshie-Madina-Mamfe Road and the Sofoline Interchange as key projects either completed or near completion. Mr Kwakye Ofosu indicated that health delivery in Ghana is on course with remarkable improvement and subscriber base of the National Health Insurance Scheme, stressing that despite views by a minority of Ghanaians that the Scheme is collapsing, incremental progress have been made. Government is addressing the health care needs of our people in a comprehensive manner. On the energy sector, he said more capacity continues to be added to the countrys total grid though the recent challenges in the sector are unfortunate and regrettable. He said governments committment to produce 5,000 megawatts of power by 2016 is on course with the construction of the Bui Hydroelectric Dam, the Aboadze Thermal Plant, the Navrongo Solar Power Plant and the Kpone Therman Power Plant, among others...
