Gratitude challenge day 21: This one is easy. I’m grateful for Hailey! On this day, exactly 5 years ago, I became ‘Gramily’. Hailey Grace came into this world already opinionated, as clearly shown by the outthrust lower lip, with a head of hair to equal the one her daddy arrived with, and looking so much like his baby pictures she gave me a sense of déjà vu every time I looked at her. My first experience of grandmothering. And now at last, I can speak from first-hand experience to all those tedious people with bumper-stickers that proclaim ‘Ask me about my grandchildren!’ not to mention all my friends and acquaintances who buttonhole me and whip out pictures as though I was as fascinated by their drooling infants. (Now they can do it on cell phones, which raises exponentially the number of photos they can carry with them.) Those grandparents are deluded. Their grandchildren are nothing more than ordinary kids. Hailey, on the other hand, is the cutest child ever, with the possible exception of my other grandchildren. And you can keep your anecdotes about how clever your grandkids are. Mine are so far above average, they require a new definition of the term ‘average’. And creative! Why, Hailey’s drawings leave Picasso in the dust. Especially the ones she draws in the dust, her favorite medium. And her lyrical compositions are more singable than Andrew Lloyd Webber. (No wait, I’d better make that Stephen Foster. Nobody without 10 year’s training can sing Andrew Lloyd Webber.) Humor aside, the main reason grandkids are so much fun is that you can make their day just by showing up. And vice versa. Grandchildren make things fun again. Things like Christmas trees. And autumn leaves. And throwing twigs into the stream to see how fast they float. Grandchildren make the twirling teacup ride at the County Fair worth every penny of the $5 you pay for 2 minutes of nausea. Grandchildren fine-tune your moral compass, so that when you look at the injustices done to other little girls, you are motivated to do something about it, because children are Gods greatest gift, and should be treated as such. Happy Birthday, Hailey Grace!
