Graves of Inkerman in the foothills surrounding Sevastopol, - TopicsExpress

Graves of Inkerman in the foothills surrounding Sevastopol, Ukraine. This area saw a LOT of Nazi troops advancing to the Black Sea. When you see graves marked 1942 you know they were in the real stuff. The original fortress, Kalamita, was built there in the 14th century but is slowly decaying into nothing. The area has hundreds of caves where people have lived over the centuries. The Soviets used to store bombs and ammunition in the caves but then there was an explosion that took out SOME of the armaments. The rest? They just left them there! Twenty years later locals began removing the bombs and trying to salvage the metals. Needless to say, many people died as a result. Finally, ten years ago the government got around to removing the remaining bombs. Notice the one black monument... those are bullet holes from Nazi guns! So weird to see REAL history just laying around in fields with no one really worried about preserving it.
