HARRISBURG — A special American flag is being flown to Scranton today as part of the planned honors for fallen Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II. The United States Honor Flag was placed on a plane flying from Dallas this morning. The plan is scheduled to land at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport shortly, said Captain Mark Causey of the Honor Guard Unit today. The flag will be displayed at Cpl. Dickson’s funeral Thursday in Scranton and is under special escort. The tradition of having the Honor Flag pay tribute to individuals who lost their lives in the line of duty started after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, according to The Honor Network, a non-profit organization that handles requests for the flag’s appearance for law enforcement officers, firefighters and military personnel killed in the line of duty. The Honor Flag is on a continual journey around the nation and world. Special details escort the flag from place to place so it can be flown in a hero’s honor. Pennsylvania State Trooper Sgt. Michael Koval made the request for the flag to be displayed in Cpl. Dickson’s honor. During the past few days the Honor Flag has been displayed in honor of a Kansas law enforcement officer and a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Texas, both killed in the line of duty. The Honor Flag flew above the state Capitol in 2009, in honor of fallen state Trooper Joshua D. Miller of Pittston, slain in a shootout in Monroe County.
