Sanchez, 19, disappeared more than 60 years ago POSTED TODAY, 10:10 PM UPDATED TODAY, 10:10 PM By Robert Taylor Web - News Editor SAN ANTONIO - A Korean War veteran who disappeared more than 60 years ago is finally coming home. The Army was recently able to identify the remains of 19-year-old Gilberto L. Sanchez. He was a medic assigned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment, 31st Regiment Combat Team in December 1950. Sanchezs remains were among those of 500 soldiers discovered in North Korea. His 95-year-old brother Pablo Sanchez, a Navy veteran, said it will be a bittersweet homecoming. I start getting this report and I begin to see what happened to him, and just remembering he was in a hand-to-hand combat with the Chinese, it makes me sad, said Pablo Sanchez. Gilberto L. Sanchez will be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery next Friday at noon. A celebration of the fallen soldiers life will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the VFW hall in New Braunfels at 600 Peace Ave. Thank you so much!!
