HMC are recruiting new volunteers in October! See below... Hackney Migrant Centre Voluntary positions Hackney Migrant Centre is recruiting new volunteers in October 2013. HMC’s volunteers are integral to the running of the Wednesday sessions. The drop-in aims to offer a welcoming and safe environment for vulnerable people that require support and understanding. There are a number of positions ideal for those who would like to become more involved with working with refugees/asylum seekers and migrants and would like to increase their knowledge of this sector. All volunteers are provided with a free cooked meal and tea/coffee during the session and can claim travel expenses for volunteering (a receipt will be required). Please read the job descriptions below and explain which position/s you would like to be considered for. You will need to be able to attend our next recruitment meeting on Wed 16th Oct 2013 9.30am – 11.30am. Ideally, it would be good if potential volunteers can then stay for the rest of the session until 4.30pm to shadow existing volunteers or come the following week to shadow. Volunteers need to shadow for at least one session before attending the induction on Wed 30th Oct 9.30-11.30am. 1. Volunteer advocate position (job description) This role also offers practical experience for those who would like to gain experience working in a front-line/grassroots capacity or would like to increase their confidence in advocacy/communication or administrative skills. Commitment - Need to be available on Wednesdays 11.30-4.30pm - Minimum commitment of 4 months - Need to be available to volunteer on a fortnightly basis at a minimum - Attend training on the following dates: o Induction and ‘who is a refugee and other types of migrants’ – Wed 30th October 2013 9.30am -11.30am o Advocate casework – Wed 13th Nov 9.30am-11.30am o Asylum support – Wed 27th Nov 9.30am-11.30am o Housing and benefits for migrants – TBC Personal qualities - Empathy and understanding of the complex issues faced by migrants - Willingness to listen to the concerns of visitors to the centre - Patient, calm manner when dealing with vulnerable visitors Tasks - Helping run the registration desk - Registration of visitors, taking basic details - Providing advocacy and support to visitors, including: telephone calls, letter writing, form filling - Supporting the work of professional advisors - Help to set up the session and clearing away - Various administration tasks to help the running of the session e.g. updating information packs - Attending the debriefing at the end of the session 4pm 2. Drop-in support volunteers This role is more suited to those volunteers who would like to help out in a more practical way and not get so involved in advocacy work. Additionally, it requires less commitment and attendance at training is not essential – although all volunteers need to attend the induction. Commitment - Need to be available on Wednesdays 11.30-4.30pm - Minimum commitment of 2 months - Need to be available to volunteer on a fortnightly basis at a minimum - Attend Induction and training ‘who is a refugee and other types of migrants’ – Wed 30th October 2013 9.30am -11.30am Can attend additional training provided by HMC Personal qualities - Empathy and understanding of the complex issues faced by migrants - Willingness to listen to the concerns of visitors to the centre - Patient, calm manner when dealing with vulnerable visitors Tasks - Helping to set up the session and clearing away - Helping in the kitchen where appropriate - Welcoming visitors to the centre - Helping make tea and coffee - Welcoming visitors at the door - Helping the reception desk find visitors’ files - When appropriate, assisting the volunteer advocates - Sitting and talking to volunteers - Signposting visitors to social activities - Various administration tasks to help the running of the session e.g. updating information packs - Attending the debriefing at the end of the session 4pm 3. Washing up Helpers Commitment - Need to be available on Wednesdays 1.30pm-4.30pm - Flexible commitment Tasks - To help wash up and tidy away after lunch has been served - Clearing tables, and taking plates, glasses etc back to the kitchen - Helping to sort out the recycling - Helping to take the bins out 4. Head cooks Commitment - Need to be available on Wednesdays 9.30am-2pm - Flexible commitment Tasks - To help prepare a meal for our visitors and volunteers (around 60-70 people) - Preparation of a meat and vegetarian dish - Coordination of shopping for the meal and possible local food pick ups - Manage a team of volunteer kitchen helpers, along with a second cook Personal qualities - Patient, calm manner when dealing with volunteers, some of whom might not have a high level of spoken English and vulnerable visitors - Flexibility in being able to work with a limited budget and varying types of food available If you would be interested in volunteering with HMC, please email: [email protected].
