HYPERGLYCAEMIA HYPEROSMOLAR SYNDROME (HHS) This is one of the acute complications of diabetes, especially type 2. It usually occurs when a person get an elevated blood sugar. It is triggered by an infection, other medical conditions or medications that cause blood glucose to elevate. The high concentration of glucose in the blood plasma causes an osmotic pull of water from the cells of the body. The kidney begin to dump the excess glucose into urine. This leads to cell dehydration and increased blood osmolarity. It further causes electrolytes imbalance. Lethargy sets in and progresses to coma. The condition is a life-threatening medical emergency. Ketoacidosis rarely accompanies this condition. Early symptoms: -Weakness -Lethargy -Vomitting -Nausea -Seizures -Signs of dehydration -Tachycardia EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT should include *Correcting dehydration and replacement of electrolytes *Improving blood pressure and circulation Complications such as this are best managed by a physician specialist.
