Hacking aside, Seth Rogen should know that theres nothing funny about imperialism. North Korea may be ridiculous, but the fact that the US has played a role in the assassination of many leaders is a totally grotesque thing to laugh about. Millions of people live in poverty, misery or significantly worse conditions and tens of thousands have been killed or tortured by US-sponsored regimes that come after the assassinations. The reason regimes like North Korea, Syria, Zimbabwe, (until recently) Libya, (until 1999) Yugoslavia and so on have legitimacy is because millions of people have had the lived experience of being attacked for making the choice to govern as if they were sovereign nations. People tolerate authoritarian leadership because they believe that subjugation is worse. The sick thing is how often theyre right.* So making a film about assassinating the leader of North Korea isnt just profiting from an authoritarian regime while doing nothing to help the people living under it. Its normalizing and making light of something that most of the world regards as an ongoing unspeakable human tragedy. Hopefully Americans will see that too, soon.
