Harry Clarke is a left-wing economist who generally defends big government and likes to insult libertarians. We had a short exchange about the LDP budget that included a discussion of compassion... and for fear that he will delete it, I thought Id post it here for posterity. Harry: I dont want the Australian political agenda set by the IPA and selfish libertarians who focus on narrow self-interest because of the luck they have experienced in their life and their parental genes. Me: Your claim at compassion rings hollow. As the LDP budget says, apologists for inaction will complain that reform is hard, and will use that as an excuse to neglect their responsibility and call themselves compassionate. In truth they are both cowardly and cruel in their disregard for future generations. People who advocate unemployment, debt, and stagnation (such as yourself) like to say you care, but apparently you dont care enough to think about how you are destroying innocent peoples lives. It is easy to sit in affluent comfort (as you do) and wax lyrical about how youre a nice person; its much harder to to pursue policies that actually work at reducing poverty… because they arent populist and require a proper understanding of incentives and genuine voluntary community.
