Here are a couple pics from Dai in Malawi, and some commentary she sent about the pics... It is SO HOT in the field every day, but at least it is dry heat, but with that, it is so incredibly dusty. And, it is never too much fun visiting the market, and that was what I did this morning. And, to the village in the afternoon. Attaching two pics here. One is the pic from the market. I got a kick out of the goat head hanging there, knowing it would unnerve the general American public. So, I asked Victor to take a pic of it. He stood there and took a hundred (ok, slightly exaggerated) of them, to the point a drunk man came around asking him to pay for taking a photo of a goat head. Victor told him that he was taking pictures of a girl working in the stall, and the head just happened to be there. The drunk man liked the logic and said ‘well, if that is the case, that is good. Go ahead and take the photo.’ We got a big laugh out of it. The next photo is a older woman (you can spot her) I met in the interview in the village today. As it turned out, her husband was the First secretary at the Malawi Embassy to the US in the 60’s, but she also said that he was with the UN and that they were based in New York. I found it fascinating that a person at that wealth and status would end up back living in this desolated village. But once I arrived at her place, I see that she had a great setup. There is a beautiful tree in the courtyard, she has running water, flush toilet, hot water, nice shower and all that. The only thing she does not have is electricity. That said, it is still fascinating that she’d be back here. Also, at their stature, 3 out of her 6 children died, almost the type of stats one would only expect out of a regular farmer.
