Here is a another example of why I dont take information from another media member, and report it as fact, which is, unfortunately too common in my business. A reporter for the well regarded Golf reported Friday he had learned from a source that golfer Dustin Johnson had been suspended by the PGA for six months for failing a drug test. The website story included a lot of details, including Johnsons three failed drug tests, and the substances in question, once marijuana and twice cocaine. I reported the story, but only with the qualification that it was from Golf, and not confirmed by the PGA or anyone associated with Johnson. I made it clear Golf got its information from an unnamed source. A few hours after the Golf report, the PGA denied it had suspended Johnson. Viewers, and especially people on Twitter, often criticize me for being late to report breaking stories, and I will admit I am sometimes slow to join the reporting party, but I would rather be dead last and be confident what I am reporting is true. Im not looking for a medal here, Im just explaining why I may not always be First To Report, so some of you guys on Twitter (I know thats another platform.), give me a break will ya?
