Here is a bio of the available information on Aodh Buidhe ONeills father Domhnall Oge ONeill, brother of Niall Ruadh, ancestor of the ONeills of Tir Eoghain : Domhnaill Oge O’Neill Domhnaill Oge O’Neill was the elder son of Aodh Meith O’Neill, and reigned as King of the Cineal Eoghain from 1230-1235, when he was succeeded by his Tanaiste, Brian Catha an Duin, the son of his younger brother Niall Ruadh. Although little is known of his reign, the split between the septs founded by himself and his younger brother Niall Ruadh would become the two predominant branches of Clann O’Neill. The chieftains of the O’Neills of Tir Eoghain descend, through Brian, from Niall Ruadh, while those of Clann Aodh Buidhe from Domhnaill Oge, and take their name from his son Aodh Buidhe. Originally, Domhnaill Oge’s descendants, the Clann Aodh Buidhe, were dominant, as his sons Aodh Buidhe and Niall Culanach both held the title of King of Tir Eoghain, though in the long run Niall Ruadh’s descendants would be the more formidable branch. Domhnaill was the Tanaiste to his father Aodh Meith, who died of natural causes or disease in 1230, as the Annalla Ulladh record : “Aodh O’Neill, King of the North (of Ireland) and King of all the Half of Conn, and worthy future Arch-King of all Ireland, and the person of the Gaedhil who most killed and pillaged the Foreigners and destroyed castles, died. And the person who it was least thought would find death by any other way than the Foreigners, rested in Christ.” Domhnail Oge married Beanmidhe O’hEignigh, the daughter of the King of the Airghialla, and through this female descent his son Aodh Buidhe, was able to make the O’Neills Arch-Kings over the Airghialla. His death is often stated to be in 1234, but a note was inserted in the Annalla Ulladh that his death was in fact in 1235, rather than in 1234 as originally stated in that text.
